General Fleece Blanket Guidelines

Project Linus Chapters are instructed by the National Organization to reject blankets that are not of good quality. Also, blankets must be free of contaminants—smoky & musty smells, scented detergent, softener, dryer sheets; and pet hair. This isn’t because we’re picky—this is to ensure sick children will not be negatively affected.

Please read through this whole page. We appreciate your time and we want you to succeed just as much as we appreciate your efforts. Your attention to these guidelines will ensure that our volunteers do not have to spend many hours repairing fleece blankets before they can be given to children who need warm blanket hugs.

Fleece Blanket Sizes:

Toddler/Child 45" × 54" (115cm × 140cm)

Pre-Teen/Teen 54" × 72" or larger (140cm × 185cm)

  • These sizes are approximate. A larger blanket will fit all sizes of children but a small blanket will fit only the smaller ones.

  • Please include a label that shows your name, address, and/or email with each blanket you donate so we will know whom to thank!

  • However, generally, fleece blankets are made from:

  • 54" x 60" (1½ yards of fleece) or 60" x 72" (2 yards of fleece)

  • Please don't buy just one yard of fleece for a fleece blanket. The blankets are too skinny.

  • If you’re making a large blanket, use age-appropriate fleece patterns.

For Central Texas Project Linus please make single layer fleece blankets.  It just does not stay cold long enough in this area for double layer fleece.

Please make a straight  fringe – no knots

Before fringing, neatly cut off the selvages (the two edges that are curled or wavy with tiny needle punched holes).   If you have a rotary cutter, ruler and self-healing mat, they make this very easy.

If more than one person will be fringing the blanket, decide on the width and length of the fringe before starting to fringe the blanket.

Do not use beads or any embellishments on blankets - they can be a choking hazard for children.

Check your blankets carefully for straight pins. It's far better that you find the straight pin in your blanket than the child receiving your blanket.

If you plan to fringe all four sides, cut out all four corners as shown below — cut out  square with dimensions that match the length of the fringe.  For example:  3" square cut out for 3" fringe, 4" square for 4" fringe, etc. This is important—if you don't cut out the corners the blanket will not lay flat
